Presentation: Project Ideas
According to BAFTA, a single hour of television produced in the UK, whether fiction or nonfiction, produces 13 tonnes of carbon dioxide. (Broadcast)
A study at the University of Southampton found that on average UK household emissions are 17.1 tonnes of CO2 emission per year (Buchs & Schnepf,)
For my self-initiated Project, I would like to look at how we can build sustainability into our teaching (focusing on the MA Television course). There is a growing awareness in the TV industry that productions need to me more environmentally sustainable. The figures above show the impact one hour of TV has on the environment so by incorporating this into our teaching and making it as a ‘standard practise’, the student can take it and use it in the industry. If we don’t make students engage with sustainability now, then how can we hope to change the industry. They are our future!
For our elective unit we had to choose either inclusion or substantiality. I believe both of these are incredibly important areas to build into our teaching. I chose inclusion so this self-initiated Project will give me the opportunity to investigate the topic of sustainability myself. I’m very much looking forward to learning about what is happening in the TV industry and feeding it back into my teaching practise. I also look forward to engaging with the students in this area as I would love to hear their thoughts and ideas how they see their role in shaping sustainability in TV.
According to Albert international manager, Jeremy Mathieu, who has also been a sustainability advisor for the BBC, an hour of TV typically produces about 13.6 tonnes of CO2 – the same as running three homes for one year.
