SIP- ideas and brainstorming!

10/11/21

The journey to decide what to do for my SIP has been difficult and forever changing. It has taken time to homed down my idea to a manageable and focused question.

There are many aspects that I want to address in my Pgcert, from the sense of belong, culture, working in teams, mental health, blended learning and inclusion.

These seemed to be such massive subject and I was overwhelmed as to how I could cover all these aspects of my teaching. Initially I wanted to look at the sense of belonging in blended learning and how it effects the student experience. This would cover many of the areas I highlighted above. I did a brain storming chart to put down my thoughts.

However I still felt overwhelmed, I read and listened to several article and podcasts on blended learning, with my main focus on students who have remained online.

Thought this reading I realised that I was really draw to the team building aspects or the course and how we could build relationships through the activities that we set. I work predominately in the Tv studio so even during the pandemic I was the only lecturer on MA TV having face to face interactions with the students. I realised how important this was, as for the students this was the first time they had met me and each-other. This made me realise that my workshops aren’t just about learning but team building, but how can you do this when you always have the knowledge that what you do is being assessed as part of you MA? I was able to create some extra curricular workshop after the last lockdown for the student to get extra access to the TV to enhance their learning and opportunity to try new genres in the TV. During these workshops I hoped to build confidence in the students ability, facilities a space on non assessment, opportunities to try a new role, and build relationships with other students. Also to have fun and create an environment where the students could unite in the mistakes and enjoy the whole experience. Some students chose not to come a they said it was only an exercise and so it didn’t matter! I would like to know if my hopes and assumptions for these workshops were in fact true. I would like to hear from the students about what they thought of the sessions, did it create the environment I was hoping for and if not why? How can I improve on them to help create a space of learning with an umbrella of belonging?

This gave me the idea for my PgCert

How do you make extra curricular work relevant and important and offer a sense of belonging’?

This allows me to look at many of the aspects I am interested but within a structured idea, such as team building, sense of belong, confidence building ?

The affective pedagogy- the sense of belonging, trust, the anxiety- spectrum of feeling within their own experience, but also within me and what I’m identifying, my assumptions and how that effects my role, my learning.

My news mind map is below.
